Blingy Brits attract thieves on the slopes

With British skiers forking out a staggering £117* million on ski gear this winter, it is not surprising that one in twelve (8%) will fall victim to thieves according to new research from Direct Line Travel Insurance.

Despite constant warnings that thieves are in operation, skiers remain complacent about protecting their personal possessions. Of those unfortunate to experience theft, 44% had something stolen while relaxing at a café, 19% while on the slopes and a further 14% from their hotel. The most common items stolen were ski equipment, sunglasses and cameras.

But protecting against theft and accidents is not a top priority for many skiers. Of those who decided against travel insurance, 21% felt confident they wouldn’t have an accident and as a result felt they were low risk, 23% assumed their existing policy covered them for winter sports and 26% didn’t even think about it.

Chris Price, Head of Direct Line Travel Insurance, said:

“With more and more skiers becoming fashion conscious on the slopes, it comes as no surprise that they are prime targets for ski thieves. As well as buying the right travel insurance, we would advise skiers to invest in a decent ski or snowboard lock as extra protection.

“Also, if you stop for refreshments and are skiing with a partner, an excellent deterrent is to swap a ski each to make an odd pair of skis. Finally, to safeguard your personal belongings, take advantage of the safety deposit box or safe provided by your hotel where possible”.

Notes to editor:

Research was carried out online between 15th and 22nd December 2005 by YouGov who interviewed a sample of 529 skiers/snowboarders. Results are unweighted.

Calculations:

1.25 million Brits took a skiing holiday last year (figure from ski club of great Britain. 17% of skiers took their own clothing/equipment. The average spend per skier on clothing/equipment is around £550 (costs provided by snow and rock). 17% of 1.25 million = 212,500. 212,500 x £550 = £117 million.
